A hard natural stone with visual swirls of movement/ grain, and larger color contrasts with speckled quartz particulates in the surface. Most granite will appear to have medium to dark color ranges. Granite comes from various quarries throughout the world. Most granites come with a polished finish; however brushed, leathered, or honed finishes are also available. Granite is a porous surface so it must be sealed. Resealing will be required on a bi-annual or annual basis depending on how the stone is maintained. Never clean with bleach or ammonia. These are man-made slabs of synthetic processing. There are many companies that make this product some of which are Caesarstone, Cambria, Silestone, and Zodiac. All will use pulverized real stone mixed with a resin to produce slabs in various colors, typically in a polished finish. This type of top will work great for someone looking for virtually no maintenance or someone who is looking for a surface that is very uniform and consistent. Pricing: $$$-$$$$
Generally has more movement and veining in its visual appearance. A softer stone that is more absorbent of liquids and will etch if it comes in contact with anything acidic. Limestone will feature off white, natural, or gray coloring in a very consistent color without larger particulates commonly found in granite. There are generally two types of soapstone. Vermont which has a green gray tonality, and Brazilian, which will generally have a gray/brown appearance. This product is considered an artisan option and can have a very industrial, primitive, or even modern look depending on the dyes and colors of sand used. Many designers can mix in a variety of interesting materials such as metal flakes, sea shells, colored glass, etc. You can polish or choose a more primitive textured surface if so desired. A very nice alternative for islands, serving, or bar areas. Available in a variety of thicknesses and hardwoods such as cherry, walnut, oak, maple, teak, etc. Woods can also be mixed to create a checkerboard or other unique designs.
