Granite

granite-stone

A hard natural stone with visual swirls of movement/ grain, and larger color contrasts with speckled quartz particulates in the surface. Most granite will appear to have medium to dark color ranges. Granite comes from various quarries throughout the world.  Most granites come with a polished finish; however brushed, leathered, or honed finishes are also available.  Granite is a porous surface so it must be sealed.  Resealing will be required on a bi-annual or annual basis depending on how the stone is maintained. Never clean with bleach or ammonia. Pricing: $$-$$$

Quartzite

Quartzite
These are man-made slabs of synthetic processing. There are many companies that make this product some of which are Caesarstone, Cambria, Silestone, and Zodiac.  All will use pulverized real stone mixed with a resin to produce slabs in various colors, typically in a polished finish. This type of top will work great for someone looking for virtually no maintenance or someone who is looking for a surface that is very uniform and consistent. Pricing: $$$-$$$$

Marble
Marble

Generally has more movement and veining in its visual appearance.  A softer stone that is more absorbent of liquids and will etch if it comes in contact with anything acidic. Polished marble is not recommended for high use areas but is available in a honed finish.  Must be sealed on a bi-annual or annual basis depending on how the stone is maintained. Never clean with bleach or ammonia. Pricing: $$-$$$

Limestone

Limestone

Limestone will feature off white, natural, or gray coloring in a very consistent color without larger particulates commonly found in granite. Most limestone will feature a honed or slightly textured finish and should be sealed. A color enhancer can also be applied to give the tops a richer more saturated color. A softer stone that is more absorbent of liquids and will etch if it comes in contact with anything acidic. Must be sealed on a bi-annual or annual basis depending on how the stone is maintained. Never clean with bleach or ammonia. Pricing: $$-$$$

Travertine

Travertine

Very similar to limestone but with open pours and crevasses that are filled with a color coordinated resin. Great option for a more primitive, old world look. Most colors are in the off-white to beige/neutral range. Must be sealed on a bi-annual or annual basis depending on how the stone is maintained. Never clean with bleach or ammonia. Pricing: $$-$$$

Soap Stone

Soap Stone

There are generally two types of soapstone. Vermont which has a green gray tonality, and Brazilian, which will generally have a gray/brown appearance. All soap stone is extremely soft and highly absorbent. This stone will have a more rustic or primitive look and it can be oiled to give it a deeper coloration and offer a bit more protection from staining. Must be sealed on a bi-annual or annual basis depending on how the stone is maintained. Never clean with bleach or ammonia. Pricing: $$$-$$$$

Quartz

Quartz

These are man-made slabs of synthetic processing. There are many companies that make this product some of which are Caesarstone, Cambria, Silestone, and Zodiac.  All will use pulverized real stone mixed with a resin to produce slabs in various colors, typically in a polished finish. This type of top will work great for someone looking for virtually no maintenance or someone who is looking for a surface that is very uniform and consistent. Pricing: $$$-$$$$

Corian

Corian

Acrylic or plastic like composite surfaces made in a variety of colors and are good choices for those who seek a very consistent, maintenance free option. Integral sinks are also a nice feature whereas the sink of choice can be fused to the bottom of the work surface for a seamless continuous look. Pricing: $$$-$$$$

Laminate

Laminate

There are many new laminate choices today ranging from the old stand-by finishes to some new upgraded stone like finishes featured through Wilsonart’s high definition offering. Formica also offers an upgraded 180 FX line with a variety of unique finishes and textures… far different from Grandma’s kitchen. Pricing: $-$$

Concrete

Concrete

This product is considered an artisan option and can have a very industrial, primitive, or even modern look depending on the dyes and colors of sand used.  Many designers can mix in a variety of interesting materials such as metal flakes, sea shells, colored glass, etc. You can polish or choose a more primitive textured surface if so desired. Pricing: $$$-$$$$

Wood

Wood

A very nice alternative for islands, serving, or bar areas. Available in a variety of thicknesses and hardwoods such as cherry, walnut, oak, maple, teak, etc. Woods can also be mixed to create a checkerboard or other unique designs. Wood tops can also be used for primary use and in sink areas, a protective permanent finish coat will need to be applied for any wet location. Pricing: $$$-$$$$

Paperstone

Paperstone

An environmentally friendly “green” slab material that is manufactured with paper, resins, and natural pigments.  Color range is typically from medium to dark tones, all available in a matte finish. Pricing: $$$$-$$$$$

Recycled Glass

Recycled Glass

Another environmentally friendly “green” material made from recycled glass and resins.  Color’s ranging from light to dark and typically have a speckled consistent look. Pricing: $$$$-$$$$$

Metal Tops

Metal Tops

These include stainless steel, copper, zinc, galvanized steel, etc.  Metals are great designer options for those who desire something truly unique. There are some new options that now include sprayed real metal coatings over substrate to produce the look of metal.  This option is great for more complex tops that would be difficult to produce with sheet metal. Pricing: $$$$-$$$$$
